The National Lottery Heritage Fund has awarded a substantial grant of £286,623 to English Heritage for the Shared Horizons Project at Housesteads Roman Fort in Northumberland. This funding marks a significant milestone in the long-term initiative to enhance the historically significant site on Hadrian's Wall, making it more accessible and engaging for visitors. Housesteads, Britain's most complete Roman fort, built within a decade of AD 122, once housed an 800-strong infantry regiment until the end of the 4th Century. Despite its rich history and awe-inspiring structure, the site requires extensive improvements to enhance the visitor experience.
The grant will enable English Heritage, in partnership with the National Trust and Northumberland County Council, to plan and execute several crucial phases of the project. These include enhancing the museum, revitalizing and expanding site interpretation, refurbishing the activity center, creating accessible pathways, improving on-site facilities, and promoting environmental sustainability. Andrea Selley, English Heritage's operations director for the North, expressed gratitude for the funding, emphasizing its role in supporting the project's initial phase and fostering community involvement.
Selley highlighted the project's potential to not only improve visitor experiences but also to engage local communities through inspiring activities and volunteering opportunities. This aligns with the goal of connecting more people with nature and heritage. The funding is a vital first step, and English Heritage is already working on the next round of plans.
Additionally, English Heritage will take over the management of the Housesteads Visitor Centre, previously managed by the National Trust. This partnership aims to streamline the visitor experience and unify the storytelling at this important World Heritage site.
