Respec: Reviving the Old-School Gaming Media Experience (2026)

The games industry media landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, and two industry veterans are betting on a unique approach to revive the classic multi-format video games website. Tom Orry and Alex Donaldson, with a combined 40 years of experience, have launched Respec, a site that aims to bring back the charm and passion of old-school gaming journalism.

In an era dominated by video influencers and a few media behemoths, their decision to launch a new website is bold. They believe that there's a gap in the market for a lean, independent operation that focuses on quality content and a clear voice.

"The media landscape has become increasingly consolidated, with a few players dominating the conversation. We want to create a space where gaming enthusiasts can find a community and engage with content they truly care about," Orry explains.

The Old-School Charm

Respec's core is text-based gaming coverage, reminiscent of the early days of gaming journalism. Orry believes that text is where the work lies, and video content will be the playful, fun element.

"The best gaming magazines felt like exclusive clubs, and we want to recreate that sense of community. We'll engage with our readers, understand their preferences, and provide content that resonates with them," he adds.

A Distinctly British Voice

In a media space dominated by US ownership, Respec aims to stand out by embracing its British roots. Orry says, "We want to create something unapologetically British, paying homage to the magazines we grew up with. This tone and voice can travel well and attract a global audience."

Reader Revenues and Independence

The site will primarily be funded through advertising, with some content available through paid subscriptions. Donaldson acknowledges the challenge of building a business with direct user subscriptions, but believes that with exclusive content and a clear independent voice, they can attract and retain subscribers.

"Corporate-owned media has struggled to gain reader support. We want to show that independent media can thrive and provide a more aligned and reasonable experience for both readers and the team," Orry emphasizes.

Building an Audience and Brand

Donaldson's experience with RPG Site has taught him the importance of respecting the user while maximizing advertising revenue. He plans to apply this knowledge to Respec, ensuring a sustainable business model.

"We're not aiming to compete with the established giants. Our goal is to create something new, manageable, and enjoyable for gaming enthusiasts. We want to build a brand that people trust and feel invested in," Donaldson concludes.

As Respec navigates the challenging media landscape, their focus on quality content, community, and independence could set them apart and create a unique space for gaming enthusiasts to call their own.
